Why your mouth falls open at night
Yes, people tape their mouth at night. Here is why. Awake, you breathe through your nose. Asleep, your jaw relaxes and your mouth falls open. The air takes the short way, and the night gets louder and drier.
- The jaw relaxes
Your mouth falls open in your sleep.
- The tongue slides back
The airway behind it narrows.
- The soft palate rattles
Air rushing past makes it vibrate. That is snoring.
- The mouth dries out
You wake up thirsty, with morning breath.

The morning check
Four questions about how you wake up.
1 / 4
-
Do you often wake up with a dry mouth?
-
Is there a glass of water by your bed at night?
-
Has someone told you that you snore?
-
Do you wake up tired after a full night in bed?
You probably breathe through your mouth at night.
A dry mouth, snoring and tired mornings often go together with a mouth that falls open in sleep. Mouth tape keeps your lips closed, so your nose does the breathing.
Your nights sound calm.
Mouth tape helps most when the mouth falls open in sleep. If the snoring comes from the other side of the bed, get it for them, or one each.
Who is it for?
Not a medical test. Very loud snoring with pauses or gasping needs a doctor.
Why the nose
Let your nose do the breathing
Awake, most of us breathe through the nose. Asleep, the jaw relaxes, the mouth falls open and the air takes the short way. Tap to see the difference.
- 1Filtered
Hairs and mucus in the nose catch dust and pollen before the air reaches your lungs.
- 2Warmed and moistened
By the back of the throat, the air is close to body temperature and almost fully humid.
- 3Nitric oxide from your sinuses
Nose breathing carries it to the lungs, where it helps your blood take up oxygen.
- 4Lips together, tongue up
The jaw stays closed and the airway behind the tongue stays open.
- 1Cold, dry, unfiltered air
It goes straight to the throat, without the nose to clean and warm it.
- 2The jaw drops, the tongue slides back
The back of the tongue narrows the airway behind it.
- 3The soft palate vibrates
Air rushing through a narrow airway makes the soft tissue rattle. That is snoring.
- 4A dry mouth by morning
Saliva dries up overnight. That is where morning breath and a sticky mouth start.
Asleep, you cannot choose. The strip keeps your lips together, so your nose does the breathing all night. The small hole in the middle is there if you need it.

Mouth open or lips closed
Snoring is rarely a problem for the one who snores. It is the person next to them. In the buyer reviews we read, the verdict that counts usually comes from the partner.

Measured, in a small study
60 % fewer snores
After one week of mouth tape, measured snoring fell from 304 to 121 snores an hour.
20 adults who breathed through their mouth at night slept with mouth tape for one week, and 13 of them halved their snoring. A small study without a comparison group, in people with mild sleep apnoea: it shows what a closed mouth can do, not a promise. Our strip is not a treatment for sleep apnoea.

Why mouth tape
Close your mouth at night. Four things change.

Quieter nights, same bed
A lot of snoring starts when the mouth falls open in sleep. Keep the lips together and you breathe through your nose instead.

Wake up with more energy
Breathing through the mouth at night is linked to lighter, more broken sleep. Nose breathing is how your body is built to sleep.

A fresh mouth in the morning
A night of mouth breathing dries the mouth out, and a dry mouth is where morning breath starts. Lips closed, it stays moist.

Soft, with a small hole
Stretchy fabric that feels like cotton. The small hole in the middle means it never feels sealed.

The jawline
Lips closed, tongue up
With the mouth hanging open in sleep, the jaw drops back and the tongue rests low. With the lips closed, the tongue rises to the roof of the mouth and holds the jaw up. That is the resting posture myofunctional therapists teach.
The strip keeps your lips together every night, so the closed-mouth posture becomes your default. May improve your jawline and chin profile over time. How much your face changes over months is different for everyone.
What to expect
Give it three nights
What buyers of mouth tape describe, night by night.
Night 1
Weird for a minuteYour mouth is closed and your nose does the work. The small hole is there if you want it. Some people wear it for 20 minutes on the sofa first.
Night 3
You forget it is onBy the third night most people stop noticing it. Your partner may notice the difference before you do.
Week 2
Nose breathing feels normalFewer mornings with a dry mouth. It becomes the last thing you do before lights out.
Month 3
A habitLips closed at rest, at night and more often in the day. Your next box arrives before you run out.
The science
Read what the research says
Small studies, honest numbers. Here is what is known about breathing through the nose and the mouth at night.
Nitric oxide made in the sinuses travels to the lungs when you breathe through the nose, with a positive effect on blood oxygenation (2026).
Mouth breathing narrows the upper airway, makes it more collapsible and makes sleep more fragmented (Kim et al., 2013).
One week of mouth taping took measured snoring from 304 to 121 snores an hour in 20 adults who breathed through their mouth (Lee et al.).
Lists dry mouth, bad breath, drooling in sleep and feeling tired all the time as signs of mouth breathing in adults.
Mouth tape is not a treatment for sleep apnoea. Very loud snoring with pauses or gasping needs a doctor.
Who it is not for
- Children.
- Anyone with a blocked nose or a cold, until the nose is clear.
- Sleep apnoea, or very loud snoring with pauses or gasping: see a doctor first.
- After alcohol or sleeping pills, or if you might be sick in the night.
- Pregnancy, heart or lung problems: ask your doctor first.
It does not help snoring that comes from the nose or the throat with the mouth closed.
Before you order
Will I still be able to breathe?
Yes. You breathe through your nose, the way most people do all day. The strip has a small hole in the middle, so air can pass through your lips too if you need it, and it peels off in a second. Night 1 feels strange for a minute. By night 3 most people forget it is on.
Does it stop snoring?
It helps with snoring that comes from an open mouth: quieter, not always silent. It does not help snoring that comes from the nose or the throat with the mouth closed. Very loud snoring with pauses or gasping needs a doctor first.
How does the subscription work?
Every 3 months you get 3 bags of 30 strips, one strip a night. For two: 3 black and 3 pink. Your first box has one extra bag, free (two for two).
We email you before each delivery. Skip a delivery, pause or cancel online in your account. No minimum term.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Online, in a few clicks, from your account or the link in our emails. No minimum term and no phone call. You also have 14 days to change your mind after your first box arrives.
Can I buy it without a subscription?
Yes. Choose "Or buy once" under the subscription: 3 bags (6 for two) in one delivery, no subscription. The free extra bag comes with the subscription only.
Black or pink?
The same strip in two colours. Black is discreet, pink is softer on the eye. Getting one for your partner too? Choose For two: 3 black and 3 pink bags, at the best price.
Does it stick with a beard or moustache?
It sticks best on clean, dry skin. On a full beard any strip holds less well, so trim the hair just above the lip and press the edges for a few seconds.
Can I use lip balm?
Yes, earlier in the evening. Not right before: the strip sticks best on dry lips and skin.
How can I pay?
Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. The checkout shows what works for your order.
When does my box arrive?
Shipping is free and tracked. You get the tracking link by email as soon as your box ships.
What if it does nothing for me?
Sleep with it for 30 nights. If it does nothing for you, write to us for a full refund.
Who is it not for?
Not for children. Not with a blocked nose or a cold, until the nose is clear. Sleep apnoea, or very loud snoring with pauses or gasping: see a doctor first. Not after alcohol or sleeping pills, or if you might be sick in the night. Pregnant, or heart or lung problems? Ask your doctor first. It does not treat any condition.
